German Food Culture

German cuisine has much to do with the everyday traditions and culture of Germany. Most celebrations, either private or public, are accompanied by great tasting beer and exceptional tasting food.

Great German food varies significantly from region to region. Various delicacies are even famous only to a particular town or village. For instance, Nurnberg is famous for its Nurnberger bratwurst. Munich on the other hand has become renowned for its Weiswurst. Amazingly, these delicacies are available from the simplest of places. You can find them at the temporary outlets at the market place, and even from a cart at the train station.

There is also great rivalry between the regions as to who has the better German recipes. Strong regional rivalry has always existed between the north and south of the country. The claim for the title of best food recipes provokes a healthy banter between the local citizens.

Germany is traditionally known for sausages and sauerkraut.  However there are a huge amount of German recipes on offer that most people of other nations wouldn’t even be aware of. These include unique flavorsome meat dishes, a large variety of potato dumplings, and many types of potato salads. One of the least recognized claims to fame are the numerous fresh salad recipes accompanied by the most amazing dressings.

And lest we forget those with a sweet tooth, there is a large variety of pastries and cakes on offer too. At almost any cafe in Germany, you will be able to enjoy the most deliscious layer cakes, unrivalled anywhere in the world.

Unfortunately, the basic skills of cooking traditional German food is on the decline. With the emergence of large food outlets, it is now convenient to buy ready made sauerkraut, sauerbraten, and German dumplings etc. Fine pastries and exquisite cakes can easily be found at almost any bakery.

The result is that few of the current generation would know where to begin to create a traditional meal.

German culture has close ties with German food. With essential German food culture at risk, it is important that the art of German cooking be revitalized. This is an important issue for Germans living in Germany. Germans living in other countries around the world, along with their descendants, face these issues even more so.

For the German food culture to survive, we must take a proactive approach. Therefore lets encourage our young people in the cooking techniques and recipes of our German forebears. In doing so the German traditions and customs will also remain alive.
